Ashbourne Credit Union - Business of the fortnight
Published 31 Jul 2018
Question 1. Can you describe your business?
St Declan’s Ashbourne Credit Union has been in existence since 1970. We offer a wide range of financial services to our members, in a co-operative and not-for-profit basis. We are directed by a voluntary Board of Directors who are elected by our members at each year’s AGM.
Credit Unions are independent financial organisations, regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland, all of which are established in their own specific location called common bonds. Each of them determines what types of products and services they are able to provide to their members.
For our Credit Union, we can accept membership from persons living or working in Ashbourne itself, as well as Ratoath and the townlands surrounding Ashbourne. Many people are often unaware that they can join us if they are working locally but living elsewhere. We are actively trying to spread this message around, so any assistance the Chamber can give us will be most welcome.
St Declan’s Ashbourne Credit Union provide a wide range of highly competitive loans, big & small, plus an extensive range of financial services, including online accounts, a Mobile App, Budget accounts, Foreign Exchange services, our quarterly Car Draw (which is very popular), Bill payment facility, credit transfers etc.
As well as working directly with our members, not to be overlooked is our ongoing activity within our local schools & wider community, supporting their initiatives for growth and development wherever we possibly can.
We have proudly supported local students, encouraging them to sign up for our bursary scheme which is getting more popular every year.
Question 2. What are the advantages of being located in Ashbourne?
Our Credit Union has a great location in the town, with the added benefit of onsite parking. As well as providing service to members in. So we have a large catchment area that we draw our members from, and with the ongoing development of the local area, more and more people are discovering the benefits of membership of our Credit Union for themselves.
Question 3. Why do your customers choose to do business with you?
Our membership base is growing all the time, through all lifecycles and we’re delighted to welcome every new member. Thousands of members are using their credit union account with us for their saving & borrowing needs. Our members particularly find that our lending rates are extremely competitive, which we always strive to be. We deal with everyone as an individual and we are proud to serve so many of our community, maintaining our personal service to each and every one of them. Credit Unions consistently rank as the No. 1 in Customer Service, of which we’re very proud. We’re open six full days a week and even offer late night closing each Thursday evening until 8.30pm. So it’s possible to meet one of our Loans Officers, Membership team & our Counter staff at a time that’s right for them, guaranteeing the best possible face-to-face service for them
Question 4. How do you add value to your customers wants and needs?
Many of our members have remained loyal to our Credit Union for a considerable number of years. That’s because we take the time to understand our members’ borrowing & savings needs, as well as offering them a wide range of complementary financial services only available to our members. We continue to offer a unique personal service delivered six full days a week face to face from our office, plus members are also free to avail of online access to their account 7 days a week, 24 hours a day if that’s more convenient for them. They can check balances, transfer funds and apply for a loan, from their home, office or out and about using our App.
Question 5. Do you have any future plans or promotions coming up?
Our Credit Union will be 50 years old in 2020; coinciding with Ashbourne’s 200th anniversary that year will include a big celebration!
Meanwhile, we continue to have seasonal Loan promotions on offer to our members; we are currently promoting loans for Home Improvements, extensions & renovations etc., as well as our Back to School campaign, helping parents to cover these costs.
